Production Workers operate under general supervision to package products off the production line. They are responsible to performing simple visual quality inspections during the packing process.
The production area is clean, safe and a nice, cool 55-65 degrees. You may be asked to stand up to 10-12 hours per shift.
Shift times fluctuate weekly. Day shift start times vary between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. Night shift start times vary between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. Shifts are generally scheduled for 10-12 hours. Schedules are posted 2 weeks in advance, with a degree of flexibility required. Positions require frequent weekend work.
Production Workers start at $14.94/hour with a 3 month increase to $15.13/hour, plus night shift premium of $.80.
Freezer Workers are responsible for performing all duties around stacking and storing products in our freezer, and then will be certified for operating a forklift.
Since the Freezer is -20 degrees, you only have to work 40 minutes of every hour, and you’re off 20 minutes. Plus, warm freezer gear is already provided for you.
Day shift runs from 4:55 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. and the night shift 4:55 p.m. – 3:00 a.m. Positions require frequent weekend work.
Freezer Workers start at $16.08/hour with a 3 month increase to $16.29/hour, plus night shift premium of $.80.
This position involves manually cleaning the plant and equipment using hoses, foamers, buckets, brushes and barrels. Most Sanitation Workers start out as Sanitation Helpers and work under the general direction of Sanitation supervisors and specialists.
The sanitation area is a nice, cool 55-65 degrees inside the plant. Conditions can get very wet and steamy when multiple hoses are in operation.
Start times are between 9 a.m. – 10 a.m. or between 10 p.m. – Midnight. A normal shift runs about 10 – 12 hours. You might have to work some weekends.
Sanitation Workers start at $14.94/hour with a 3 month increase to $15.13/hour, plus a night shift premium of $.80.
These positions are a very important part of the production line. They lead production workers to perform the duties outlined in our procedures. They’re responsible for measuring ingredients, mixing batches for production and monitoring the quality of our ice cream throughout the production run. They also fill in for the Crew Leader when necessary.
Positions are on our safe, clean plant floor, where the temperature is a nice, cool 55–65 degrees. This position is fast paced.
Shift times fluctuate from week to week. Day shift start times vary between 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Night shift start times vary between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Shifts are generally posted two weeks in advance, with a degree of flexibility required. You may be asked to work some weekends.
Start rate is $18.71/hour, plus night shift premium of $.80.
Crew Leaders are responsible for all aspects of operation of the high-speed machines used in making our delicious ice cream. They turn on and shut down all machines, including boxers, coders, conveyors, wrappers, etc. They verify proper mix in tanks, complete paperwork such as weight, temperature, code and flavor sheets, and act as Production Line Leader.
Positions are on the plant floor where the temperature is a comfortably cool 55–65 degrees. This position is fast paced.
Shift times fluctuate from week to week. Day shift start times vary between 3:00 a.m. and 9:00 a.m. Night shift start times vary between 2:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. Shifts are generally scheduled for 10 – 12 hours. Schedules are posted two weeks in advance with a degree of flexibility required.
Start rate is $20.42/hour, plus night shift premium of $.80.
Maintenance Technicians are responsible for supporting operations by completing preventative reactive maintenance on all equipment and machines. They complete daily work, fill out maintenance logs and support operations by responding efficiently to business needs and calls.
Positions are on the plant floor where the temperature is 55–65 degrees. They may also work outside that at times can be hot or cold.
Day Shift start time is between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Night Shift start time is between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This includes approximate shifts of 10 – 12 hours. You may be asked to work some weekends.
Start rate ranges from $23.05 to $25.24/hour, plus night shift premium of $1.25.
These positions are responsible for operating, trouble-shooting, repairing, and completing daily tasks of the plant’s large ammonia refrigeration system, along with the plant’s boilers and water and air systems.
Positions are on the plant floor where the temperature is 55–65 degrees. They may also work outside that at times can be hot or cold.
Day Shift start times is between 5:00 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Night Shift start time is between 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. This includes approximate shifts of 10 – 12 hours. You might be asked to work some weekends.
Start rate ranges from $24.31 to $26.50/hour, plus night shift premium of $1.25.
Being a freezer worker is pretty cool. No really. This is one of the most important jobs on the floor. You can’t make ice cream without freezers, and this job is making sure the freezers are fully stocked 24/7. I’m driving the forklift, and stacking and storing cartons of ice cream. It’s a fast-paced job, but at the same time, I only have to work 40 minutes of every hour and get to chill the other 20.
Being a sanitation worker, I have a very important job here at Wells. If you’re going to be making the best ice cream in the country, you’d better make sure your plants are the cleanest. We clean up the floors, and we break down the machines and completely clean and sanitize them. And I mean completely! For quality control, you can’t have the beginning of the ice cream you’re making now mix with anything left over from what you were making before
My work day is pretty amazing. I mainly work with ice cream all day. Delicious, sweet-smelling ice cream. I inspect each carton as it comes off the line. But not just one line; I can go from line to line inspecting different flavors of ice cream. And I rotate position on the line, so work is always changing. It’s really good pay just for making sure everything goes smoothly on the Wells production line.
If I had to guess what makes me so good as my job, I’d say it’s because I’m a self-starter and I care about quality-control. There are a lot of things going on at the same time, and I’ve got to be able to watch them and make sure they work together. I’m responsible for all the production workers on my line, but I always play an active role with my crew to make sure we hit our production goals.
If you’re going to have a plant filled with lots of machines, you’re going to have to have someone around to keep them maintained. And that’s me. You’d be surprised how full and fast-paced my days are. It’s never boring; there are a so many lines to keep going all the time. But it’s wild. I’m responsible not only for keeping people working, but making sure those machines keep cranking out our delicious ice cream.

Wells was founded in 1913 by Fred H. Wells when he purchased a horse, a delivery wagon, a few cans and jars, and the good will of the business from Ray Bowers, a dairy farmer in Le Mars, Iowa -- all for $250. The original contract granted Fred H. Wells the milk distribution route and also guaranteed a source of raw milk from Mr. Bower's herd of fifteen milk cows.
Around 1925, Fred H. Wells and his sons began manufacturing ice cream in Le Mars, Iowa. As the popularity of their ice cream grew, they quickly branched out and began distributing their frozen confections in Remsen and Alton the following year. In 1927 Fred H. Wells and his brother, Harry C. Wells, began a partnership to distribute ice cream in Sioux City, Iowa, located about 25 miles south of Le Mars. In 1928 Fairmont Ice Cream purchased the ice cream distribution system in Sioux City from the Wells' brothers along with the right to use the Wells' name.
Seven years later, in 1935, the Wells' brothers decided to again sell ice cream in Sioux City. No longer able to use the name "Wells," the brothers decided to run a "Name That Ice Cream" contest in the Sioux City Journal. A Sioux City man won the $25 cash prize for submitting the winning entry, "Blue Bunny," after noticing how much his son enjoyed the blue bunnies in a department store window at Easter time.
Wells is now the world's largest family owned and managed ice cream producer. As the world's largest manufacturer of ice cream in one location, Wells has made Le Mars, Iowa, the "Ice Cream Capital of the World."
